Sunday Recap

  • I thought the 11:00 a.m. worship service was our best in a long time.
  • We’ve been having lots & lots of visitors in the 11:00 a.m. service.
  • Ken’s sermon on the rich young ruler was one of the best Gospel presentations I’ve ever heard to a “churched” crowd.
  • The Swerve Blog had a great post about the rich young ruler.
  • We had a great crowd in youth Sunday School.  I never know what it’ll be like on a holiday weekend & especially w/ it being the 1st weekend of deer season in Mississippi.
  • I’m really enjoying learning how to use our new video camera & Final Cut Express.
  • Brett is playing like he’s 29 rather than 39.

God’s Divine Economy Week 2

gods-divine-economy-logo

I’m preaching this morning.  Ken is at State for to see his son honored.

We are in the 2nd week of God’s Divine Economy.  My topic is God Owns Everything (if the youth were listening this will sound very familiar to the 1st 2 weeks of Pocket Change).  The text is Psalm 50:8-12, but it may feel a bit like Bible Drills at times.

I enjoy preaching & I’m thankful that my pastor trusts me w/ his pulpit.

If you are in the 11:00 a.m. service you’ll get to see this video (8:30 crowd, you’ll get out 3:11 earlier so don’t complain):

Sunday Reflections

Filed under: Decision 08,Parkway,Pictures,Sundays,Videos,Youth Ministry — Neil @ 8:17 pm

Today, was the 1st Sunday of Decision ’08. Today’s topic was death. Ken used 1 Corinthians 15 as his text & “If you have a problem w/ death, it is because you have a problem w/ life” is the one statement that really stuck w/ me. I’ll have the sermon podcasted & posted here & here within the next day or so.  It was our 2nd straight week of really good attendance in youth Sunday School. The 2 videos posted below were used in youth Sunday School (1st video) & the 11:00 a.m. worship service (2nd video).

Tonight, was the final Community Celebration of 2008. It was the 1st time we held it in Indian Trails subdivision. The weather was great, good food & a nice turnout. Hopefully, the folks in Indian Trails sensed that we really do care about building relationships with them.

Weekend Review

  • Amanda’s grandmother w/ cancer is our biggest concern right now.
  • The little girl who sits in front of us at the State football game who last week asked if Amanda would marry her dad (her mom is an iPhone user so we’ve hit it off) this week turned around looked me straight in the eye and said “you’re bald.” I thought of explaining to her that I’m not bald, but I’ve chosen to shave my head, but I resisted. She also made a very inappropriate (but quite funny) attempt to grab Amanda’s sunglasses. She’s much more entertaining than State’s offense.
  • As I posted here we had planned & even began to take the Miata to Starkville, but a very slight sprinkle as we were pulling out of the drive way scared us out of it (the Miata is small, but w/ the top up it’s unbearable for me).  Of course we had clear skies the rest of the trip.
  • Lunch was here. They still have the best cheese sticks, but their burger now ranks behind Mugshots.
  • Good youth crowd today.
  • I’m excited about next summer’s mission trip to Athens, Greece.
  • This guy came to eat with us after church tonight. Amanda cooked a big meal & even baked a red velvet cake w/ homemade icing.
  • I finished a project for my NOBTS class. The class hasn’t met for 2 weeks due to Labor Day & Gustav.
  • It’s 11:06 & the odds of me waking at 5:00 in the morning to run before prayer breakfast at 7:00 are getting worse by the minute.
  • Isn’t this a cute dog.

Sunday Reflections

  • Guessing about Sunday attendance is totally guess work.  Last weekend was a holiday weekend & attendance was up.  This weekend w/ no holiday attendance was down.
  • Good feedback from our Sunday School classes today.
  • We spent the afternoon w/ Amanda’s family.  Her grandmother is in the hospital w/ bronchitis & congestive heart failure.  We went to visit her granddad first & then to the hospital.
    • They’ve been married 58 years & it’s sad to see them separated by sickness.
    • Her granddad was amazed that I didn’t need a ladder to change out some light bulbs for him.
    • The way that generation communicates is so different.  Her grandparents haven’t talked on the phone to one another in years (literally we asked).  For years they’ve sat side by side in their recliners, but never talk on the phone.  Amanda & I talk/text dozens of times each day.
  • It was a beautiful day so we did our traveling in Amanda’s Miata.  Here are a few pictures:
  • I came home tonight to write a short paper for a class only to find out there is no class tomorrow due to problems caused by Gustaf at NOBTS.  Is it wrong of me to be excited about no class due to a hurricane?  With Ike closing in on the gulf I wonder if we’ll meet next Monday.  You can follow Ike here.
  • Tonight, I began reading unChristian.
  • Tomorrow I leave for Birmingham to attend Refuge.  I’ll post more about it tomorrow.

Sunday Reflections

  • Great attendance in youth Sunday School.  I was expecting a smaller crowd due to it being a holiday weekend.
  • Why do so few youth who attend Sunday School not go to one of the worship services?  That’s a question I’d like to find the answer to & a trend that we have to change.
  • The talk of the day was Gustav (thankfully that meant less talk about last night’s State game).
  • I’m excited about being at SON Valley next Saturday.  It looks like we are going to have a great mix of teens & adults of all ages.
  • Amanda & I worked in the nursery during the 11:00 a.m. worship service.  We had the 4 year olds.  They were a lot of fun (I love asking kids questions because they are so honest).  Its amazing how complex their thinking is at this age.  I was very tired after an hour w/ them.

Sunday Reflections

  • Fay made her presence felt today.
    • The lights flickering during Sunday School gave a nice strobe light effect.
    • Very limited power in the 11:00 a.m. worship service – no sound, no screens (does using screens make a service contemporary?), limited lights
    • low attendance for a time of the year that is typically high attendance
    • hot – due to the a/c being out
    • no internet access in the office
  • I did, I enjoyed the uniqueness of the 11:00 service. Sort of in the same way I enjoy the electricity being out for an hour or so at home. It can be fun to sit around & tell stories w/ candlelight, but I wouldn’t want to do for more than a couple of hours.
  • Great testimonies tonight from the mission team that recently went to Montana
  • I was really amazed at the response to the youth mission trip to Athens, Greece next summer. I had set a goal of 6 teens to go & felt like 8 would be a huge success. Tonight, I had 11 give me a definite yes & a few others still debating. I’m really amazed & will post more tomorrow about this.
  • The Olympics are over. What did I do before the Olympics? Thankfully, college football begins Thursday night!

Sunday Recap

Today was busy.  It looked like this:

  • Usual Sunday morning prep for Sunday School
  • Video 8:30 service (Ricky Persons, a preacher & one of Parkway’s own, was preaching & his mom wanted a video)
  • Collect Decision 08 ballots (why didn’t more folks fill out the paper ballots?; hopefully its because they chose to vote online instead)
  • Try to make the new 7th graders feel comfortable in their 1st time for youth Sunday School (I was really impressed w/ the 7th grade girls, they seem to be a fun & outgoing bunch.  They should make the jr. high worship service lively.)
  • Youth Ministry Orientation & Lunch w/ parents of new 7th graders.
  • Prepare & review notes for the 5:00 p.m. parent’s meeting.
  • Voted for my top 4 decisions for Decision 08
  • Played the Wii to relax.
  • Parents Meeting (Where were they? The biggest news is the Athens, Greece Mission Trip next July 11-19.)
  • Evening worship service.
  • Ate here.
  • Checked out the Decision 08 voting.
  • About to read this (I think of this song every time I pick up the book).

Sunday Reflections

  • Youth Sunday School attendance was better than I expected. Summer is always a season of low Sunday attendance & I expected today to be especially so w/ a lot of families on vacation, but it was actually pretty good.
  • We had pancakes in Sunday School. Sunday School is always better w/ pancakes & sausage. Thanks to the men & teen girl for cooking.
  • I attended the 6th grade graduation luncheon today. The food was from Chimneyville (my current favorite Clinton restaurant). I spoke briefly to the parents about Parkway’s Youth Ministry & LAUNCH.
  • I talked w/ Gayle for a long time this afternoon. It was the 1st time we’ve talked in several weeks due to the summer schedule. We’re very different, but I learn from her.
  • I preached tonight on 2 Timothy 3:14-17.
  • We ate w/ some friends tonight at Newks. Here’s the proof:
