WIRED Summer Camp Reflections

  • Student Ministry is as much about adults as it is teenagers.
  • We had an amazing group of 55 adults who served incredibly this week.
  • Thankful for interns who work non-stop for very little $.  I remember those days…
  • Really blessed to be a part of the staff that planned WIRED.
  • Thankful for a education minister & a pastor who served on our food team this week.
  • Stuart Hall was phenomenal.  I’ve never had a “name” speaker be so easy to work w/ & really minister to our teens.  He sent us all of the small group material that went alone w/ the messages 2 weeks! before we’d asked for them.
  • If you are in youth ministry or a parent & have not read Max Q by Stuart Hall & Andy Stanley you need to purchase it.  His morning messages were principles straight out of the book.
  • 190 teens & not 1 complaint by the security or anyone associated w/ the condos!
  • We saw God move in the hearts & minds of teenagers as they were challenged to live out their faith.

For more about went on at camp check out our student ministry’s facebook & twitter accounts.

Camp is a blast, but I’m really glad to be home.  We’ve got 1 week “off” before we take some of our leadership students to Super Summer.

Summer Camp Registration

Our summer camp registration begins tomorrow.  Here’s 3 short videos I shot back in September while on a site visit.  All of the beach, condo, pools, etc. talk is because we target our summer camp for teens who aren’t already following Jesus.

Super Summer

Super Summer is one of the best kept youth ministry secrets in Mississippi.  It’s a discipleship & leadership camp for teens who’ve finished 8th grade – through those who’ve just graduated from high school.  There’s a list of 14 requirements that must be met in order for students to attend.

This year Super Summer will be held July 12-16 on the campus of Mississippi College.

If you are a youth leader & not involved I encourage you to check out MSSuperSummer.com.  You can also keep up w/ Super Summer by following on Twitter.

Summer Meltdown

Last night, our student ministry hosted Summer Meltdown.  It’s an annual event that serves as an entry point to our ministry for jr. high students.  We had a great crowd despite the biggest school we draw from has not yet started school & everyone one of our high schools had a high school football game.

The night consisted of:

  • Worship – Josh Brister & band; Lance Brown (football chaplain @ Vandy) spoke
  • Games – dodgeball tourny, tons of infatables, rock climbing wall, basketball, etc.
  • Food
  • We ended the night w/ the band covering some of our crowd’s favorite music (see the video below)

We used the event to attract lost teens.  Lance did an incredible job sharing the Gospel (about 30 responded to salvation).

For the unchurched teens we made a heavy push for our student worship service that begins this Wednesday.

Overall it was a fun, but very exhausting night.

Why Didn’t I Think Of That?

Filed under: jr. high ministry,Summer,Videos,Youth Ministry — Neil @ 6:00 am

Tonight, we have Summer Meltdown.  It’s our back to school event for Jr. High students.  When we were brainstorming about the event a few weeks ago we desperately wanted to have something that would connect all of the students who attend w/ our weekly student worship service.

We had lots of ideas.  Most were $$$.

Then I thought about posting a video to YouTube that would be cool, spread virally & have jr high students talking about our upcoming worship service.

I thought & thought, but nothing.  Thought some more, searched for ideas & still NOTHING.

The result = we will be passing out invite cards as students leave.  Since nothing great came to mind we opted to not do an average video.

Yesterday, Kurt posted this video (which was developed by students).  Why didn’t I think of asking Jr. High students to help me reach Jr. High students?

End of the Summer

Can’t believe another youth ministry summer has come & gone.  Last night we had our final summer event.

I don’t know what’s more exciting to see summer come or to see it leave.  I know that right now I’m ready for the routine of the Fall.

This summer has stood out to me because everything was new (church, students, parents, camp, weekly activities).  I witnessed many teens grow in their faith.  I know many more names now than I did 3 months ago.

The summer was fun, but I’m ready for the Fall.

summer camp 09

My summer is finally starting to slow down.  The biggest events are in the rearview.  Summer camp was incredible.  1st time that I’ve been part of a youth ministry doing our own summer camp since the summer of 2003.

I’ll be posting my reviews & other thoughts on summer camp in the coming days.

Tribute to MJ

This week @ camp I had 7 8th grade guys in my room.  They were a fun group.  Full of energy, followed the rules & let me sleep @ night.

Wednesday night I entered the room around 11:30 & the guys were singing Michael Jackson songs.  We put together this video & played it Thursday morning @ the beginning of the worship service.
