Wednesday Reflections

Can’t believe I’ve led my final youth worship service @ ParkwayClick here (or just scroll down) to see my notes from tonight.

I thought it was a good night.  Friends sharing good music, final game of thumb war – ncaa tournament style, t-shirt give aways, Biblical message, & prayer.

Tonight is my last night to lead a youth worship service @ Parkway.  It’s been 3 amazing year’s of worshiping & teaching the teens here.

I think God gave me the words to speak tonight.  We’ll be looking at Joshua 1-3.  My 3 ideas will be:

  1. God Speaks.
  2. Follow God.
  3. Don’t forget God’s faithfulness.

I’ll tell a few stories about this couple:

Summer of 2001? How does Amanda still look the same & I look I've aged 20 years since then?

Wednesday Reflections

Jr. High

  • crowd – still down from our average, but getting back close to normal; hopefully, by next week the flu bug will be gone
  • music – had a coffee shop due to a lack of a drummer; Josh is still recovering from being sick & we did more slower songs than normal but I thought he teens responded pretty well
  • talk – I felt the best about this talk of the 3 in Crossroads.  I got a few texts from students about what they learned.  The talk was about how fear is a roadblock in making godly decisions.

Sr. High

  • crowd – see above;
  • music – see above; slower songs for the entire set; I thought Josh & Topher did a great job w/ the transitions between songs & w/ taking turns leading different songs
  • talk – the topic of fear seemed to hit home w/ the group; by far the best of the 3 talks in Crossroads to this group.  Based on the response to the topic of fear I’m staring to think about doing a series on it next fall

Wednesday Reflections

It was one of those nights tonight.

Jr. High

  • Crowd: low crowd, the flu had a big impact on our crowd tonight; we did have at least 2 1st timers though
  • Music: the band did a good job, but the crowd just wasn’t in it – likely due to the smaller group; we even had teens do the chicken dance to try to raise the energy level, but it just wasn’t to be tonight
  • Talk: I’d give myself a D.  I thought my prep was good, good material, good topic but it was just a rough night all the way around

Sr. High

  • Crowd: see above
  • Music: high schoolers were more into the music but w/ 1/2 the normal crowd it just didn’t have much energy
  • Talk: I ditched the planned talk & explained to the group how I make decisions (prayer, read Scripture, get advise from those wiser than me).  It was different than normal, but much better than the jr. high.

I’m glad to put this one behind me.

Week 1 of Crossroads
Topic: When Your Past Is A Roadblock

Jr. High

  • Crowd: high 40s – we may have topped 50 for the 1st time; I honestly forgot to count, but I know I set up 56 chairs & they were very few empty seats
  • Game: powerpoint style game; not great, but not bad either; neither team got many right so that never helps
  • Music: thought Josh transitioned well between songs; teens seemed to be signing more than normal; I think the new room set-up is encouraging more crowd involvement during worship
  • Talk: average; not sure what happened, but I rambled more than usual; I talked for 25 minutes which is 10 minutes longer than my intended length in this service

Sr. High

  • Crowd: mid 20s; they were in a really good mood tonight
  • Music: above average; Josh did 4 songs rather than the usual 5 in this service (likely because of how long I talked in the jr high service)
  • Talk: I made a few changes from the jr high service & it was much better; Amanda gave me high marks – which coming from someone who has to listen to me at home indicates that God used tonight’s message

Wednesday Reflections

Overall, I thought it was a really good night.  Our crowd was 72 teens which is right on our average for this school year.  It was a cold, nasty day in Clinton, so to hit the average is nice.  But I’m ready for us to take the next step.

It was the 2nd week in a row to do something different w/ the chairs.  Last week was no chairs.  This week was a total new arrangement.  It’s crazy how much moving chairs around can change things up.

Jr. High

  • Crowd: 46; good crowd but not great; tired of us not breaking through the 50 barrier.  They were in a GOOD mood w/ lots of energy, but were still pretty well behaved
  • Game: “clothespin on peoples faces game” – 4 teams of 3, 2 of the team members pinned as many clothespins as the could in 1 minute on the other ones face.  The winning team had 28.  Why I didn’t take a picture I’ll never know.  It was fun.
  • Music: Tom Edwards Band led worship (Josh is in North Carolina leading worship for 180); Tom led for our DNow a few weeks ago & picked up right where he left off w/ our group.
  • Talk:  I answered the question “Why Am I Here?” by looking at the life of Esther & Jeremiah 1:5.  I concluded by saying something like “I don’t know why you are where you are, but I know that God has you there for His purpose.”

Sr. High

  • Crowd: 26; again good crowd but not great
  • Music: The group seemed to really enjoy having Tom back w/ us.  I love Tom’s lyrics because most our straight out of Scripture
  • Talk: I began by reading 2 Corinthians 5:17 & each teen prayed (or pretended like they were praying) for a friend who doesn’t know Jesus, we then prayed for courage to tell them about Jesus or to invite them to church; the rest of the talk was almost identical to the Jr. High Service

Wednesday Reflections

I opted to change up our regular routine tonight.  The past 2 weeks I’d gone pretty heavy in the Bible study + Disciple Now this past weekend I felt we just needed a fun night.

We did the same service in both jr. high & sr. high (made a change w/ the music after the jr. high service & it worked much better in the sr. high).  We did 2 games (see the video below for 1 of them), 3 fast songs, & a short object lesson which included a fun activity.

It was a nice change of pace.  It’ll become a regular part of our schedule.  Maybe twice a semester we’ll do something similar.

Here’s some video from “Foot Fencing.”  I really wished I’d thought to get the jr. high playing it.

Wednesday Reflections

Jr. High

  • Crowd: Mid 40s again tonight; again lots of visitors; the girls were very bubbly tonight
  • Game: Played the “push game”; was fun & a guy won which is a rariety
  • Music: Josh & his band were back tonight; the crowd had tons of energy which is good at times, but made it tough on Josh trying to lead worship
  • Talk: I cut it short due to their energy, but to my surprise they listened really well; The talk was about “The Pressure to Perform” – outward actions aimed too please the crowd

Sr. High

  • Crowd: mid 20s
  • Game – same game as jr. high; don’t usually do one w/ sr. high, but they asked for it tonight
  • Music: High Schoolers were also very talkative tonight & it kind of threw the band off
  • Talk: Went more in detail than the jr. high; emphasized more the religion vs. Christianity – hadn’t planned on it, but just sensed that’s where God was leading

We did play this video in each service.  I’ve got a longer version we’ll play this weekend at some point.

Wednesday Reflections

Jr. High

  • Music – Josh & band were out tonight.  My friend Ty (of Jonezetta fame) led for us & did a great job.  It was just vocals & acoustic.  The teens didn’t sing much for several factors (see crowd for more info).  The main issue was without drums, electric, bass & drums it just wasn’t loud enough.  When’s not loud enough for folks to be absolutely sure their neighbor can’t hear them they don’t sing.  I’m the same way.
  • Crowd – Big crowd!  Especially for the 1st week back after a month back.  We were just under 50.  We had 5 or so 1st timers & a bunch more who started coming in November.  Really disappointed that some of our “regulars” weren’t/haven’t been there lately.  We should be having 70 jr. high each week.
  • Game – No game.  Just too busy w/ Disciple Now to spend time/creative energy on a game this week.
  • Talk – Not doing a true series this month.  I’m focusing more on DNow for promotions.  Tonight, I told the Gospel.  We are sinners, God loves, & He commands us to follow Him.  I ended the night telling a story of exploding Coke cans & this baseball game.  I connected really well w/ them.  Especially for so many new teens to be in the crowd.

Sr. High

  • Crowd – 28; thought it was great to hit the high 20s on our 1st night back & several of those who never miss were out tonight due to school stuff
  • Music – see above; sr. high were more into the music though
  • Talk – the crowd did lots of talking; went well, but not as good as the jr. high

Overall, I thought it was a great night.  1st night to meet in a month & we had over 70!  Gospel was presented on a night when we had a lot of kids who aren’t saved yet.
