Book Review: Church in the Making

Filed under: Uncategorized — Neil @ 7:00 am

The author of Church in the Making is Ben Arment.  I’ve been reading his blog for the past couple of years.  While I’m not a church planter there some valuable tools in this book that can be applied to any situation.

Church in the Making is divided into 3 sections: Good Ground, Rolling Rocks & Deep Roots.  Through these 3 sections Ben tries to identify what it is that makes some church plants successful while others never make it.

Overall, it’s a really good look into what makes a new church successful.  The obvious part of the success is God’s blessing.  The other ingredients are often ignored by church leaders.  Ben gives excellent insight into the social ingredients that play a part in determining rather or not a church makes it.

As someone who serves on staff of a well established church the book provides good insight for how we are to continue to reach people in our community.  The ingredients that make a new church successful are at play w/ established churches as well.

You can order your copy of Church in the Making from Amazon by clicking here.

A few of my favorite quotes from the book:

  • Are you planting the church your community needs?
  • If you do the right thing in the wrong season, you get zero results.
  • Every church thinks their friendly.  They’re not.
  • Sociology can be just as important to a church planter’s plight as theology.
  • Repentance is hard enough without having to jump through hoops we create.
  • The truth is every church plant contextualizes for a particular culture.  It just might not be the culture around it.  Or the same era…Every church contextualizes.  The only question is to which culture.
  • The minute your congregation decides to exist for itself, the church is dead.
  • Coming up w/ a system will force you to kill your sacred cows and identify our true purpose for existing.
  • The church was never meant to be the point of the Gospel, but rather the Gospel was meant to be the point of the church.
