It’s just around the corner

I’m not exactly sure what the future of the church or youth ministry will look like exactly.  But I believe how we communicate to our audience is about to make some drastic changes.

LifeChurch has long set the pace for technology & how churches communicate.  Thanks to their generosity churches all over the country/world are using what they 1st developed.  What if 5 years ago someone would have told us that we could watch a live worship service (or any event) from our phones & it’s free?  Impossible would have been my response.

Now that’s taking place.  On almost a weekly basis I check out North Point’s service live on my phone.

It used to be that just really big churches w/ BIG budgets could buy tv time.  Now churches w/ an attendance of just a few hundred can broadcast their services live over the web (& to smartphones).

I’m guessing 2-3 years from now we’ll look back on what we are using right now the same way we look back on using overhead projectors for worship lyrics.

Super Summer

Super Summer is one of the best kept youth ministry secrets in Mississippi.  It’s a discipleship & leadership camp for teens who’ve finished 8th grade – through those who’ve just graduated from high school.  There’s a list of 14 requirements that must be met in order for students to attend.

This year Super Summer will be held July 12-16 on the campus of Mississippi College.

If you are a youth leader & not involved I encourage you to check out  You can also keep up w/ Super Summer by following on Twitter.

Snow Day

Last night I spent several hours working on things at home (neighborhood association, budget, & sorting through some pictures).  We took this picture on the snow day we had a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, we coordinated wearing the gray t-shirts that are hanging out of our sweatshirts.

The best/worst ever!!!

Filed under: Sports — Neil @ 10:57 am

I’ve noticed something about myself & others lately.  We place to much value on what we’ve just experienced.    Tuesday night I was at the Kentucky vs. State game.  I was following (as in twitter  & not in a weird stalker type of way) several of the reporters that were @ the game so I could keep up w/ the stats & behind the scenes info.  One of the reporters Pat Forde posted the above comment about a shot attempt during the game.  No doubt that it wasn’t a good shot, but the worst shot selection of the year in all of college basketball? Really?  Of the thousands of games & hundred thousands?? of shots that 1 shot was the single worst shot of the year?

It’s not just famouse sports reporters who do it either.  I do it everyday.

  • Today was the worst day ever!
  • That lunch was incredible.  Best I’ve ever had.
  • Best student worship service we’ve had all year.
  • That’s the funniest joke ever!
  • Best conference I’ve ever been to.
  • That was the worst sermon I’ve ever preached (that might actually be true in regards to last night’s).

One thing that I’m working on is trying to keep the big picture in mind.  To view events/experiences from a wider perspective, to not get so caught up in the moment.

Busy Day Ahead

Filed under: Uncategorized — Neil @ 7:00 am

My schedule is jam packced today.

  • pick-up donuts
  • 7:30 – my weekly Bible study w/ 7th grade guys at Jackson Prep; we are starting a new study on what it means to be a Godly man; today we’ll look at the life of Truett Cathy & James 4:7-10
  • 9:00 pick up Chick-fil-a for a breakfast meeting
  • 9:30 – breakfast meeting w/ the youth ministers who brought groups to Krave; our goal is to get their feedback from this year’s event & talk about plans for next year
  • 10:30 – 3:30 Super Summer (this is a link to last year’s site; the new site will be up in the next few days) meeting; youth ministers from all over Mississippi will gather at Broadmoor to discuss plans for Super Summer this coming July.  If you are a youth minister in MS & not involved in Super Summer you are missing out on the best leadership/discipleship event for your mature students
  • 4:30 depart for Starkville to watch State battle Kentucky; tipoff isn’t until 8:00 so it’ll be a LATE night & short night’s rest

The Youth Minister Uniform

Filed under: Youth Ministry — Neil @ 10:34 am

If you are a youth minister or just like to laugh at us I highly suggest reading The Youth Minister Uniform at  Here’s a sample:

Marry Way Out of Your League
I realize this doesn’t have anything to do with apparel, but it’s an unmistakable fact: youth ministers somehow trick women who are drop-dead gorgeous and possess the wisdom of a sage into marrying them. I don’t know how they pull off this epic feat, but it’s actually a prerequisite to becoming a youth minister.
