Summer Camp Site Visit

Mike & I made a really quick visit to Panama City Beach, Fl to check out the site for Wired (summer camp). The location was set before either of us started @ FBCJ so we had a few questions & wanted to see it for ourselelves before bringing 200+ teenagers & adults this summer.  Online registration for Wired is now available.

  • We left Jackson following Wednesday’s youth worship service for the 300 mile trip Panama City Beach.
  • Ate a very slooow fast food meal @ Wendy’s in Hattiesburg.
  • Arrived in Panama City a few minutes before 2:00 a.m.
  • Our camp will be held at the Marriott Bay Point Resort.  Nice place.  Really nice place to take teenagers for summer camp.
  • Overall, we were very impressed w/ everything.
  • Negatives: no kitchens in condos, not on the beach, rain could cause a big problem in getting everyone from the condos to the meeting space, wireless access is a bit of a pain (it’s critical for a few of our ideas to work) & cell phone service was terrible in the buildings
  • Positives: beautuiful facility, great meeting & eating space, lots of great pools, a free boat shuttle that picks us up @ the hotel to transport us across the bay to a secluded island/beach, lots of free time options, several restaurants (we tried out Kingfish), being off the beach = greater safety, and our group’s condos will be somewhat isolated from the other guests
  • Took lots of pictures & video for a few commercials to advertise the event.
  • Made a trip down memory lane on the way out driving along the beach in Panama City.  We saw Laguna Beach Christian Resort.  Mike & I have both taken groups there.  It was the home of my 1st youth group experience as a soon to be 7th grader.
  • We met Amanda for supper here in the Hub City.
  • Amanda & I arrived in New Orleans tonight for my seminary graduation.
  • We traveled 600+ miles, slept for about 7 hours, toured the resort, made a trip to see a few critical places (beach & grocery stores) all in about 24 hours.  Definetly not a relaxing trip, but very crucial to the success of summer camp.
  • Matt the Intern is keeping Roscoe company.  Thankfully, Roscoe remebered him from the past 2 summers & didn’t attack him.
