Smelling History

Filed under: Family — Neil @ 7:37 pm

Our bodies are so interesting.  It’s crazy how certain smells trigger memories.

  • nasty, sweaty, dirty clothes smell = jr. high boys room at summer camp
  • greasy fried foods = state fair
  • vomit = my days of working in the French Quarter

For the past few days Amanda & I have both been battling a head cold.  Amanda lost her voice on Friday night & it’s just now coming back.  I’ve had headaches, sore throat, congestion, etc.

This morning I was at Sunday School, but then Ken gave me approval to head home for the day.  I made a stop by Walgreens to pick up a few things we needed.  One of the items was Vick’s Vapor Rub (or more accurately Walgreens version that was $3 cheaper).  Nothing helps me to breath better when I’m sick than Vick’s.

It has a very unique smell.  After applying it today its smell took me back to being a kid at my grandmother’s.  I’m not sure how often I got sick at her home, but I know that every time I did she would cover me w/ Vick’s.  She clearly believed the more Vick’s I had on me the sooner I’d feel better.

What smells trigger memories for you?

  3. Nicki – most everything probably reminds you of some accident.

Cindy – your son was barking again this morning, so I guess he’s back to normal.

  4. I’m sure that was probably to rub in the fact that State lost the Egg Bowl!
