Disciple Now Preview

Filed under: Disciple Now,Youth Ministry — Neil @ 11:49 pm

One of my favorite youth ministry weekends of the year is Disciple Now.  Here’s a few things I’m excited about for Disciple Now 2009.

  • I’m hoping the DNow website (it’ll be, but it’s not up yet) will connect with even more parents, grandparents, friends, etc.
  • Michael Lukaszewski, pastor of Oak Leaf Church, will be speaking.  See the bullet list below for some more about Michael.
  • Tom Edwards will be leading worship (yes, I know that the original promotion stated differently).
  • The theme is Let There Be Light.  I think it’ll be a nice combination between teaching about grace & challenging to be light in a dark world.  I’ve been thinking about this theme for either a youth Bible study series or for DNow for almost a year, so I’m ready to see it happen.
  • The Saturday afternoon recreation will be a blast.  We’ve got some great stuff lined up.
  • I believe we’ll have as many as 60 adults volunteer in one way or another during the weekend.
  • We’ve had a good response w/ the early sign-up.  I’d like to see us have 85+ attend this year.
  • I’ve already received a flu shot so no flu for me this year.  Last year I spent the weekend in the bed.

If you’d like to help w/ DNow email me.

Here’s some insight into Michael Lukaszewski.  2 years ago he planted Oak Leaf.   He posted these thoughts  earlier today about the church’s 1st 2 years.  You can read the entire post here.

  • Me and my family moved to Cartersville, not knowing anyone, in April of 2005 to start a new church.
  • Six people attended an informational meeting in October of 2005.
  • About twenty adults in a core group met on Sunday nights at Steps of Faith dance studios in early 2006.
  • 140 people attended a practice service in June of 2006.
  • Oak Leaf Church held it’s first service on August 20, 2006.  280 people attended that first service.  We were blown away since there were about 25 people on our launch team.
  • We did not have a worship leader on staff for more than a year.
  • There are ten people on staff right now, including five full time pastors.
  • There are nearly 900 people that attend church at the movies every Sunday.  26% of those are preschoolers and elementary children.  There are about 80 students attending Fuel every Wednesday night.
  • More than 200 adults and teenagers volunteer on any given Sunday morning.
  • In August of 2008, we purchased a former bar/nightclub and are converting the 15,000 square foot facility into a building that will be used for services, student ministry and offices.  We need your help with that one.
