Catalyst Reflections

Filed under: Uncategorized — Neil @ 8:16 am

Catalyst was incredible. I learned more in 2 days than I have in semesters. For a full outline from each of the speakers I suggest you visit either Tim or Tony’s blog. Also check out Catalyst Backstage for interviews & other backstage action at Catalyst. Here’s a quick summary of what I learned:

Andy Stanley – Thursday Morning:

  • All I have is my ability to influence.
  • Moral Authority – alignment between creed & deed
  • At the end of the day everyone is a volunteer.
  • Prioritize the role no one else can play over the role than anyone can play.

Jim Collins:

  • Not all time in life is equal.
  • Who is more important than what. Get the right who & you’ll get the right what.
  • The ultimate report card comes in after I leave.
  • We get in trouble when we confuse values & practices.
  • Create a “not to do list.” Have a balance between doing & stop doing.

Stephen Furtick:

  • Their is a painful process between the promise & the payoff.
  • Be faithful in the process.
  • God is preparing you for what He is preparing for you.

Brenda Salter McNeil:

  • When we don’t want to do what God has called us to do we hold a prayer meeting.
  • God always intended for the church to be global.

Seth Godin:

  • The power of images. His powerpoint was simple and enhanced the message.
  • People like to do stuff w/ other people.
  • The net has allowed tribes to thrive.
  • We like to dress alike.
  • We define ourselves by who isn’t there.
  • Be a heretic.

Craig Groeschel:

  • It isn’t a program, model or system.
  • It has critics.
  • What do you do when you or your ministry loses it? SOMETHING DRASTIC.
  • People pleasing is idolatry.

Tim Sanders:

  • You create abundance by giving.
  • Good is the new great.

Dave Ramsey:

  • 5 Enemies of Unity
    • Poor Communication
    • Gossip
    • Unresolved Disagreements
    • Lack of Shared Purpose
    • Sanctioned Incompetence

Matt Chandler:

  • There is a way to live & teach to help people see what the Gospel is & is not.
  • If your end goal is not God then you are in trouble.
  • If we use Jesus to build a big church you are an idolater.
  • When is the last time you heard: “Follow God & it could end badly.”
  • Say what God says, but don’t be a jerk.
  • 2 Gauges
    • Money
    • Heart

Andy Stanley – Friday afternoon:

  • Become preoccupied w/ those you haven’t reached as opposed to those you are trying to keep.
  • What if this is the next thing?
  • Pay attention to people who are breaking the rules.
  • We fall in love w/ ministry methods.
  • Where am I manufacturing energy?
  • Success breeds complacency & complacency breeds failure.
