Summer is always interesting in youth ministry for the following reasons:

  • change of pace – it’s a very different pace than the school year
  • I always see a few students really grow in their faith during the summer, but I also usually see a few students really lose their way during the summer as well.
  • its both less & more – less structure & more hang-out time
  • unpredictable attendance
    • summer camps, baseball traveling teams, vacations, etc. all lead to unpredictable attendance at events
    • Tomorrrow night’s Youth Night at the Coliseum has an A list line-up (Steve Fee & Francis Chan) yet we’re only taking a van full
    • The movie night a couple of weeks ago ended up w/ a much bigger than expected crowd
  • Despite the unpredictable attendance I’m amazed at the average attendance of the h2os.  2 years ago we were hoping for a total of 20 to show up on Wednesdays.  Now we are averaging right at 50
  • I enjoy the summer, but I am glad that its only 2.5 months long

Here’s a few pictures of last night’s jr. high h2o:
